    G'day Cnoot,
What type of tent? (Shape, size, etc).
    What fabric?
How much use will it likely see and when?

Knowing this might help in determining whether or not you need waterproofing....

    cheers
    Mick

Its a large viking "A" frame tent. 12oz Canvas. It will see as much action as Hodegon gets. . . .

    (Mrs Cnoot)

We can't all be fighters - someone has to stay behind to tend the harth, mend the clothes and feed the masses...

    And greetings to Mrs Cnoot..

ok, 12 oz canvas should go for years before it starts to leak (as in worn spots where fibre density is reduced). Canvas fibres swell when they get wet, which in turn prevents water penetrating to the inside of the fabric. This is why you don't want to get the inside wet, takes a while to dry out and leaves the inside of your tent damp and that's not good.
Secondly, fly tension should be maintained as a saggy tent will be prone to leaking as the fibres swell unevenly, and serious sag can lead to the dreaded pooling - very uncool. What you may find after prolonged periods of rain is that seepage will occur where your rope frame work touches the inner surface of the canvas. This is due to reduction in surface tension which allows water to penetrate (not much water, however, think a drop or two now and then).
Where you're most likely to see leakage on a new tent is along the seams, regardless of what else happens to your tent, do yourself the favour of applying a liberal coating of Seam Seal on all the seams before your first event. This stuff lasts for ages and works a treat. When it wears out, simply scrape the old sealant off and re-apply.
Don't forget your floor, I use a poly tarp, folded in and taped at the corners with a canvas drop cloth over it. Season with carpets (good ones are the cheapies from the Persian rug places) and cow hides/sheepskins and you have a flash home, the envy of all your neighbours...
At work I regularly use canvas tents that are 20+ years old, they are all still good, other than where we have dinged them and not gotten around to fixing them, so I would say you're safe to skip the waterproofing. If at a later time you decide you should have done it, it's actually a fairly simple process to do yourself, and there are any number of good products available for waterproofing canvas.
Whatever else you ever do or do not with your tentage, NEVER put it into storage until you are 100% sure that it is completely dry. Storing canvas wet will kill it. If you are super-extra lucky it'll only get mould all over it that never comes off, lovely attractive stains that will significantly weaken the fabric for ever after. When I get home from an event or taking the family camping, I put my tents up in the yard for a day to dry/air, then put them in their bags and store. Poles, pegs and such are cleaned and left out of bags on racks in the garage roof, don't forget to lightly oil iron pegs and any other metal bits, and again, keep oil away from canvas. If your canvas is dirty, clean it with warm water and a 100% biodegradable soap, rinse like mad afetrwards and allow to dry. Proper maintenance will see your investment last for years and perform up to speed when you most need it.
    Hope all that helps,
    cheers
    Mick
